What is also nice about this (in addition to further reducing the risks from transfusions caused by viruses and other pathogens) is that since you would be producing the blood outside a human it would be free of antibodies to any of the patient's antigens. While the primary concern of transfusion is the patient's reaction to the blood causing hemolysis of the foreign blood with the associated complications, and transfused antibodies are generally fairly dilute compared to the number of antigens in the patient, it couldn't hurt for patients receiving numerous transfusions to know that they are not gradually coating their own cell antigens with antibodies from the donors.
