Next Big Future: Major CO2 Mitigation Methods: Carbon sequestering, Biochar, Low Carbon Energy Sources, CO2 Absorbing Cement, CO2 into Fuel

    Air2air,

    A "CO2 article" is science.

It maybe unfortunate that you may not have the mental capacity to comprehend such a simple fact, to the point where you put it in the same category as creationism, but it doesn't change the fact that climate change is real and that the overwhelming majority of scientist, people much smarter than you (though I guess that's not too hard) agree is very much real.

It's a shame that there's only one planet and people like you won't suffer the consequences of their astronomical stupidity and ignorance.

And by the way, this blog has plenty of posts regarding climate change and CO2.

You only noticed this now after a year of coming here? My God, do humanity a favor and jump off the nearest building you can find.

I believe air2air's primary purpose is getting his site link in his name kept alive and that his comment is argumentative. He has similar semi-praising yet critical comments. So it is not pure spam.

Anyway let me repeat his comment here and then delete the one with the link.
Air2Air said: As much as I love this blog that I check a couple times a day for over a year, I am disappointed to see a C02 article here. I come here for science - to get away from creationism, global warming etc.

My reply is also to note as General Oreo has noted is that I have many climate change and CO2 related articles. I am not that concerned about global warming but it and ocean acidification could be issues and it is not necessary to use CO2 intensive energy sources. The CO2 energy sources also happen to definitely pollute the air with particulates, smog and many other things which do kill millions. This is an often repeated point on this site which someone who visited twice a day for a year would know.

Biochar Soil Technology.....Husbandry of whole new orders of life

Biotic Carbon, the carbon transformed by life, should never be combusted, oxidized and destroyed. It deserves more respect, reverence even, and understanding to use it back to the soil where 2/3 of excess atmospheric carbon originally came from.

We all know we are carbon-centered life, we seldom think about the complex web of recycled bio-carbon which is the true center of life. A cradle to cradle, mutually co-evolved biosphere reaching into every crack and crevice on Earth.

It's hard for most to revere microbes and fungus, but from our toes to our gums (onward), their balanced ecology is our health. The greater earth and soils are just as dependent, at much longer time scales. Our farming for over 10,000 years has been responsible for 2/3rds of our excess greenhouse gases. This soil carbon, converted to carbon dioxide, Methane & Nitrous oxide began a slow stable warming that now accelerates with burning of fossil fuel.

Wise Land management; Organic farming and afforestation can build back our soil carbon,

Biochar allows the soil food web to build much more recalcitrant organic carbon, ( living biomass & Glomalins) in addition to the carbon in the biochar.

Biochar, the modern version of an ancient Amazonian agricultural practice called Terra Preta (black earth), is gaining widespread credibility as a way to address world hunger, climate change, rural poverty, deforestation, and energy shortages… SIMULTANEOUSLY!
Biochar viewed as soil Infrastructure; The old saw, "Feed the Soil Not the Plants" becomes "Feed, Cloth and House the Soil, utilities included !". Free Carbon Condominiums, build it and they will come.
As one microbologist said on the list; "Microbes like to sit down when they eat". By setting this table we expand husbandry to whole new orders of life.

Senator / Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar has done the most to nurse this biofuels system in his Biochar provisions in the 07 & 08 farm bill,

    http://www.biochar-international.org/newinforma...

Charles Mann ("1491") in the Sept. National Geographic has a wonderful soils article which places Terra Preta / Biochar soils center stage.

    http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/09/soil/...

    It's what Mann hasn't covered that I thought should interest any writer as a follow up article;

    Biochar data base;

    http://terrapreta.bioenergylists.org/?q=node

NASA's Dr. James Hansen Global warming solutions paper and letter to the G-8 conference, placing Biochar / Land management the central technology for carbon negative energy systems.

    http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/0804/0804.112...

The many new university programs & field studies, in temperate soils; Cornell, ISU, U of H, U of GA, Virginia Tech, JMU, New Zealand and Australia.

Glomalin's role in soil tilth, fertility & basis for the soil food web in Terra Preta soils.

Given the current "Crisis" atmosphere concerning energy, soil sustainability, food vs. Biofuels, and Climate Change what other subject addresses them all?

This is a Nano technology for the soil that represents the most comprehensive, low cost, and productive approach to long term stewardship and sustainability.

Carbon to the Soil, the only ubiquitous and economic place to put it.

    Cheers,

GeneralOreo, the onus is on your side to prove the facts. That's responsible science. But this is your argument:

"It's a shame that there's only one planet and people like you won't suffer the consequences of their astronomical stupidity and ignorance."

That is the standard reply I get when asking about a factual basis supporting AGW: a subject change to a vague "Save the Earth" platitude. This isn't the way they do business on nextbigfuture, a science and research-based pub. And FYI there's not only one planet. Mars in fact has been losing quite a bit of polar ice too lately as you know. And on both poles. Not one shrinking and one growing as we have here.

When GW had to reinvent itself as Climate Change, it's fair to ask what data it was that "changed". Don't show me a hockey stick or a polar bear. Show me warming. Caused by C02 levels. Not trailing 10 years behind C02 level changes. Traceable to human activity. And when you cherry-pick your charts, make sure the left axis value isn't higher than the right one. Cut it off right afterwards so the resulting trace shows nothing but an increase, not the decrease that preceded it.

Since we in the doubting camp are so mentally handicapped, it should be easy for you to produce data to prove AGW. But somehow, a controversy developed about the ways this data was represented and concluded upon. And so hands were thrown up in the air, and the label "Climate Change" was born. Now with so many Russians insisting we are entering another small Ice Age, we may all wish AGW were real.

What is crystal clear, however, is the financial and political agenda that AGW was created to substantiate and advance. The very same folks preach the evils of genetically-altered foods, air travel, peak oil, cows and nuclear power. They should be expected to answer questions and skeptics, like adults do. Just because they are do-gooder claims, they are not exempt from examination.

Most pro-GW scientists remain overwhelmingly against nuclear power. Are they wrong or right? That's why I come here to this and similar blogs; to get well-researched, indepth and intriguing information. They do a great job here and they allow differences of opinion that are the core of good science.
