Next Big Future: Improved process for getting oil from Oil Shale

  • newpapyrus · 1 year ago
The problem with Shale Oil of course is that using it produces more carbon dioxide which produces more global warming. So Shale Oil is ultimately a dead end as far as future energy use in the 21st century is concerned.

    Marcel,

Your comment only holds true were AGW a scientific fact and not but an unsubstantiated theory. Further, it would only hold true were it proved that Carbon Dioxide is, in fact, a "greenhouse gas" worth worrying about. CO2 actually makes for a lousy heating agent in the atmosphere due to its relatively poor thermal absorption properties.

Also, there's the fact that for more than a decade now there hasn't been any "global warming" since 1998. Global temps, as monitored by satellites, have remained essentially flat since then. Combine this with the coming cooler solar cycle and we're in for more global COOLING than anything remotely related to "warming."

There is, in fact, now some strong reason to believe we might actually be in for a Solar "Minimum" the likes of which caused the "mini-ice age" during the Dalton Minimum or the Maunder Minimum before it.

Ere that be the case then limiting access to domestic energy sources over some absurd concerns over carbon emissions would be obscene.

The ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising. The overwhelming majority of scientist believe that human induced global warming is a reality. A fringe minority, mostly consisting of right wing Creation Science types like Sarah Palin, believe it is not happening. But this is really not the time to play politics with the Earth's environment. its better to be safe than sorry as far as future generations are concerned.

We don't need fossil fuels in order to power our planet. Our planet can be easily and cheaply powered by a nuclear and renewable energy economy-- forever.

    Marcel,

"The ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising."

Really? You sure about that? Last time I checked the ice cap at the South Pole has been growing for over a decade now. And as to the other ice cap, the one at the North Pole, well you'd be kinda hard pressed to find any melting going on there. In fact, some guy recently tried doing exactly that - but he had to turn back due to all the ice in his way.

Oh, and as far as the ocean levels rising, you really must needs check your figures there as well. In just the past decade or so the IPCC has had to scale back their "we're all gonna drown!" hysteria several times now as their predictions of sea level rises have been repeatedly invalidated by reality.

"The overwhelming majority of scientist believe that human induced global warming is a reality."

Where are you getting this stuff? True, a large number of scientists believe in AGW - Anthropogenic Global Warming - but a large number do not. And when you look at the numbers closely you'll find a lot more experts in the fields actually related to climate are the ones who disagree with "man caused global warming." The ones pushing it? Well, they've got a lot of folk who know nothing about climate, weather, temperatures, or solar cycles. But, they do know a good government funding bandwagon to jump aboard when they see one.

"A fringe minority, mostly consisting of right wing Creation Science types like Sarah Palin, believe it is not happening."

Wow, you really need to broaden your information sources if you believe that. Something aside from the standard talking points of DailyKOS and its ilk. A bit of reality here would be most helpful. Sarah Palin is _not_ a Creationist and if you actually looked at the facts of her record you'd have been able to push past the lies and smears thrown up about her to have seen that. That you couldn't bring yourself to do even that much and opted for the simple and thoughtless regurgitating of such partisan views doesn't say much for your depth of understanding about any of your other points.

"But this is really not the time to play politics with the Earth's environment. its better to be safe than sorry as far as future generations are concerned."

Indeed. That's why it is of paramount importance that we keep the "Holy Warmers!" like Gore, the IPCC, and their ilk, as far away from being able to set policy or gain more public funds to inflict their horribly flawed social agenda that's hiding behind their bag of stupid "science" which they call "global warming" Or at least they used to call it global warming. I guess even they have noted the cooling down across the planet - the southern hemisphere has had record year after record year of cold temperatures, for example - and is now saying it's all about "climate change" and no longer mention the global warming scam thing. Typical. These clowns need to be called out for the con artists they are.

"We don't need fossil fuels in order to power our planet. Our planet can be easily and cheaply powered by a nuclear and renewable energy economy-- forever."

Well, I'm with you on the nukes. Solar? Solar is... nice... for certain limited values of "nice." It ain't worth a damn at night. Or when it's cloudy. Or during the winter time when there's not much sun to begin with. Or when there's a buncha dust up in the air. Or early and late in the day when the Sun is to low on the horizon to light up the solar arrays much. But other than that, it is nice alright. Same same with wind. Neither of which, mind you, are worth a damn when it comes to powering cars.

But, I do agree we should build more nukes.

In the meantime, we should also go whole hog after oil shale as that stuff we have plenty of here in the US and the more barrels we produce of that to meet our needs, the fewer barrels of oil we need from the Islamists or from the left wing tyrants (truly, a repetitive phrase, that) down in South America.
